Just because Tim Doughty sold the Southport Barber Shop in March, that doesn’t mean he hawked his clippers too.
Doughty still puts them to good use as he is cutting hair out of his garage, which has been remodeled into a full-service barber shop.
“It’s a real nice shop with two stools,” he said. His hours are 9 a.m.-6 p.m. Tuesday-Friday and 9 a.m.-2 p.m. Saturday. Appointments are required and can be arranged by calling 317-408-7619.
Doughty has been cutting hair since 1993. He got into the trade after taking a buyout from General Motors. In order to remain with GM he was going to have to relocate, but the lifelong Southsider and 1973 graduate of Southport High School had no intention of moving.
After attending barber school – encouraged somewhat by his wife, Ruth, who was a hair stylist – Doughty worked for Larry Bryant’s Barber Shop before opening the Southport Barber Shop in 1999 in Madison Square at the northwest corner of Madison Avenue and Southport Road. He moved his shop in 2009 to 1944 E. Southport Road, which had housed Larry’s shop for more than 40 years.
“I wanted to keep the shop on the Southside because I enjoyed serving the community,” Doughty said.
Along the way he served as a reserve patrol officer for the Indianapolis Police Department and worked full time with the Marion County Sheriff’s Department to ensure that sex offenders complied with the conditions of their probation. He retired in 2016.
Doughty, 63, said the years as a barber have been rewarding. “I enjoy working with people from the Southside. I have made many friends, and I have heard some real doozies of stories, some of which I can never repeat.”
