University of Indianapolis volunteers teamed with Pack Away Hunger to pack more than 56,000 meals Monday at Schwitzer Student Center in honor of Martin Luther King Jr. Day.

More than 250 students, faculty and staff packed the meals, which will be distributed to Indianapolis-based organizations serving families in need.

Pack Away Hunger works to battle hunger in Indianapolis and all over the world. The Nutri-Plenty meals, a healthy mixture of rice, vitamins, minerals, vegetables and soy, have a long shelf life, making them an ideal product for food banks.

After the service project, volunteers gathered for a time of conversation and reflection and enjoyed a lunch featuring King’s favorite foods.

Monday’s event also featured the dedication of the Shreve Atrium in the center, recognizing Jefferson and Mary Shreve for their generous gift to the university. The atrium provides space for students and community members to gather.
